Organic is supposed to be more environmentally friendly and more respective of nature. Organic can still use organic pesticides and fertilizers. There is no indication that these are any safer than synthetic products.
In fact, in the US, organic pesticide use is not monitored. However, studies show that children only eating organic produce show markedly decreased levels of organophosphates in their bodies in just five days.
Since organophosphates are linked to brain and cognitive issues in children, organic or bio might be a far safer alternative. People claim that organic and bio taste better and are more nutritious. That is not necessarily true.
If you think organic tastes better, go for it. Eating more produce is beneficial for you no matter how you arrive there. No studies have shown that organic or bio produce has more nutrients than conventionally grown produce.
Meat and dairy are the exception. Organic has more omega-3 fatty acids and less saturated fat than conventional.
Still confused about the difference between organic and bio? So are we. On the surface, they appear to be the same thing. Bio surely is expensive than non-Bio, and that is true, as it takes a lot to get a food product labelled as Bio. Buying Bio could do some good to the nature, but not all have that luxury to always prefer the Bio food products. But if you wish to do better for the environment and help local farming with no intention of personal gains, then you can certainly opt for the Bio food as it helps actively supporting sustainable agriculture and environmentally sound farming methods and since many Bio products come from local farms you are also supporting local business and strengthening the local economy.
Conclusions can be drawn for yourself, as to which one would you prefer buying. The biggest benefits of buying organic are of economic, ethical and environmental nature and are not so much about health. I am Kinnari, a 20 something Engineer from Pune, India. On its hand, the term 'bio' indicates products that have not been genetically modified. This means that a bio product is not necessarily ecologic, as the 'eco' label has more strict controls. On the other side, if a product is 'eco' it also means that it wasn't genetically modified.
The last label is 'organic'. It refers to a production process in which there were no kind of pesticides or chemical fertilizers involved. This means that it doesn't exclude that they might have been genetically modified.
Basically, the two last categories, bio and organic, can't receive the 'eco' label because they don't meet all the requirements. Knowing the differences between these categories can help you make a more aware choice and avoid being fooled by advertising.
