The Painting: Smaller and more loosely brushed, In the Meadow shows the girls seated side by side on the grass, the brunette with her back turned, the blond in three-quarter profile holding a small bouquet of wildflowers. They wear the same or similar informal summer costumes note the identical lace collar. Their intimacy and their tranquil, protected existence as well as their contrasting appearance—here and in various other works the artist painted over time—contribute to what must have been understood as an appealing sentimental effect.
In the lower right corner, two large soft hats with wide brims, of a type often depicted by Renoir, lie on the ground. At either side, enclosing the central figure group, are trees with straight slender trunks, one of which is wrapped in ivy. The foliage meets at the top edge of the canvas, suggesting a bower. The filmy landscape must be imaginary and offers only slight indications of two figures passing on a path, the pitched roof of a house, and the barest outlines of another building just beyond.
Over a light ground Renoir sketched a variety of pale patches of color that float and fade into one another. In a related horizontal canvas, both girls wear hats, and one picks flowering branches from a fruit tree Girls Picking Flowers in a Meadow , ca. Such pleasing pictures were conceived for the market, as, by this time, the artist, who had escaped from poverty, well understood his clientele, his own needs, and the financial requirements of his family.
Durand-Ruel bought In the Meadow from Renoir in March ; eventually, the dealer sold it on three separate occasions to American clients. However, according to Julie Manet Rouart in a letter to the Museum this was not the case.

Leningrad [St. State Hermitage Museum. Intended for public display, these vertical grand-scale canvases are among the artist's most daring and ambitious presentations of contemporary subjects and are today considered masterpieces of Impressionism. On view only at the Frick, Renoir, Impressionism, and Full-Length Paitning was a landmark exhibition, bringing together, with the Frick painting, several beloved masterpieces from around the world.
The exhibition was shown in the Frick's East Gallery, a space often used for the display of full-length portraits from the institution's permanent collection. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue offered fresh insights into Renoir's complex ambitions, when, as a young artist, he submitted works to both the avant-garde Impressionist exhibitions and the official Salon. While painting in the new Impressionist style, Renoir remained uniquely committed to the full-length format — a traditional type eschewed by most of his fellow Impressionists.
The project drew on contemporary criticism, literature, and archival documents to explore the motivation behind Renoir's full-length figure paintings as well as their reception by critics, peers, and the public. Technical studies of the canvases themselves also shed new light on the artist's working methods.
