Why do cables get hot

Reaction score 9, If a cable gets considerably warmer in a short time when under load that's a fair indication it's overloaded. I would also suggest you have it checked by an electrician.

The temperature rating on the cable shows the maximum temperature before damage occurs. The general working temperature of the cable should be a lot lower that the temperature indicated.

Reaction score 6, Feeling cables with a finger thermometer will not give an acurate assessment of the capability of the cable to carry the load The main concern with generating heat in a cable,is ,how is it dispersed If the cable is routeed through insulation that traps that heat, then problems could occur, breakdown of insulation etc If the cable is in free air,the heat is dispersed pretty effectively.

Reaction score 3. Hi You need to get this checked. If you can see the temp rating of the shower, can you also see the cross sectional area of the conductors? You should see either 6mm or 10mm! Problem you may find if its getting considerabley hot in free air conditions then there may be a potential problem over load etc one of my main concerns would be if the cable runs under insulation ,where the heat will be unable to dissipate this area would then be getting hotter and could potentially cause a fire check the cable size and kw rating of the shower so many shower been installed with the wrong cable size.

And this issue is not something that is uncommon. As a professional electrical service in Fort Worth, TX , every now and then we receive calls and queries from our clients regarding their home wiring getting all too heated. Keeping in view the ubiquity of the problem, we decided to blog on this subject and help our readers in understanding what causes home wiring to heat up and what they can do to address the issue in advance.

Please Note: The information presented in this blog should not deter the reader from consulting a local electrical service in Fort Worth, TX as situations tend to vary and an action plan need to be designed accordingly. This blog should only serve as a resource for building the basic understanding on the subject.

There are a number of factors that contribute towards the heating of wires deployed in domestic electrical systems. Room coolers and air conditioning units may help you to survive in the extreme temperatures of Texas but the electrical wiring concealed behind the walls and in the attic does not have the same privilege. Have you ever tried crawling your way into the attic during the summers? Then you surely know how hot it can get there.

Home wiring has to withstand the superheated environment and perform continuously — all the while bearing the electrical load of the air conditioning unit that is keeping the indoors pleasant.

The electrical current through the wires itself causes the home wiring to heat up. Add to this, if the wires are single stranded, broken or twisted, the resistance of the medium increases even further.

If you ever notice the home wiring heating up to extreme levels, immediately pull down the main circuit breaker and contact a local electrical service in Fort Worth, TX for professional address.

Another factor that contributes to a heated home wiring is the characteristics of the existing electrical wiring installed in a building. A high percentage of currently existing residential blocks in United States were constructed before s. As a result, single strand aluminum wiring was deployed. These aluminum wires do not have the durability of the copper wires and neither are they robust enough to cater to the electrical demands of modern homes. This explains the reason as to why homeowners, who are living in these traditional homes, often complain about heated wires.

That is, the atoms heat up. This process is called " Joule heating ", and is the same principle for wires as for bodily tissue. The current in the conductor is due to the drifting of electrons inside a conductor in a direction opposite to the flow of electrons During their drifting they collide with their atoms vibrating about their mean position and lose some of kinetic energy to the vibrating atoms which increases the amplitude of the vibration of the atoms thermal energy of the metal with the corresponding rise in temperature of the conductor.

All wires which have electric current flowing through them have electrons moving through the wire. The reason for why wires heat up when a current flows through them is that a battery converts chemical energy into electric potential energy.

This electric potential energy is given to the electrons, and since the electrons try to minimize their electric potential energy, the electrons convert this electric potential energy into kinetic energy.

Due to the wires having electrical resistance, which means that they resist the motion of electrons, the electrons bump into atoms on the outside of the wire, and some of their kinetic energy is given to the atoms as thermal energy. This thermal energy causes the wire to heat up. Electrical burns occur when you hold on to a wire, and due to heat transfer, some of this thermal energy is transferred to you.

When the wires get hot enough due to a constant input of heat, there will be more heat to transfer to you if you touch the wire, and all of this excess heat can cause burns and fires.
